How to Write a Clear Visa Cover Letter
A cover letter does not change the requirements of a visa route. What it can do is explain the application so that a caseworker can find the evidence, understand the circumstances, and see how each requirement has been met.
Start from the requirements, not the story
Set the letter out against the requirements of the route you are applying under. Take each requirement in turn, state how it is met, and point to the document that evidences it.
Explain anything unusual
Gaps in employment, income from more than one source, periods spent outside the UK, third-party support and changes of address are all easier to accept when they are explained rather than left to be inferred.
Keep it factual
Avoid adjectives and appeals to sympathy that are not supported by evidence. A caseworker is checking documents against rules; a letter that reads as advocacy without evidence rarely helps.
Structure that works
A short introduction identifying the applicant and the route; a numbered list of requirements with the evidence for each; a short section explaining anything unusual; and a document schedule at the end.
Where a solicitor helps
Where an application is complex or a previous refusal is in play, a solicitor prepares the covering submissions, checks them against the rule relied on, and approves them before submission.
Home Office fees, service standards and Immigration Rules change. Check the current position on GOV.UK before relying on any figure or timescale on this page.
Next step
Speak to an immigration solicitor
Tell us briefly what you need and we will confirm the next step. Advice is given by a solicitor, and the scope of work and fees are agreed in writing before substantive work begins.
