Family and partner visas
UK Spouse Visa Processing Times and Delays
Spouse visa applicants usually want a realistic idea of how long a decision takes. Processing times are published by UKVI as service standards, and they are aims rather than commitments. They are also outside any solicitor’s control.
Published service standards
UKVI publishes the periods it aims to decide applications within, and these differ between applications made inside and outside the UK. Check the current published position on GOV.UK before making plans that depend on a decision date.
Why an application can take longer
Applications commonly take longer where evidence is incomplete, where finances need explanation, where verification checks are made with an employer or bank, or where the application raises a suitability issue.
What can reasonably be influenced
The completeness and internal consistency of an application can be influenced; the queue cannot. Applications that are consistent on their face, with a document schedule and explanations for anything unusual, give a caseworker less reason to make further enquiries.
When an application is outside the service standard
Where an application has been outstanding beyond the published standard, it may be appropriate to make a written enquiry or, in limited circumstances, a formal complaint. A solicitor will advise whether and when that is sensible.
Living with the wait
Where travel, work or a tenancy depends on the decision, take advice before making a commitment. Do not assume a decision date, and do not act on the basis of one.
