Eligibility & genuine visitor
What makes someone a genuine visitor?
The Home Office considers the purpose, funding and circumstances of the visit together—not a bank balance in isolation.

The genuine visitor requirement
Appendix V requires the decision-maker to be satisfied that you will leave the UK at the end of your visit, will not live in the UK through frequent or successive visits, and are genuinely seeking entry for a permitted purpose. You must also meet the funding requirements and not intend to undertake prohibited activities.
An application that fits together
Your explanation of the trip should agree with your work or study commitments, income, spending, accommodation and travel history. Documents assist only when they support the circumstances described; a large collection of papers cannot resolve an unexplained contradiction.
Individual circumstances matter
A person with limited travel history or no property is not automatically disqualified. Explain your actual position and the reasons for a temporary visit rather than trying to imitate another applicant’s circumstances.
Common mistakes
- Treating an invitation or high bank balance as enough on its own.
- Describing a short holiday while documents suggest an indefinite stay.
Evidence to consider
These are examples to consider where relevant, not a mandatory checklist or a guarantee that requirements are met.
- A realistic explanation of the purpose and length of the visit.
- Funding evidence and continuing commitments outside the UK.
