Finances & funding

How much money should a UK visitor show?

There is no universal minimum bank balance: the question is whether the visit is realistically funded.

No fixed visitor bank-balance threshold

Appendix V does not prescribe a single minimum balance for every Standard Visitor. You need sufficient funds for the reasonable costs of your visit, including travel, accommodation and any dependants, without working or accessing public funds.

Costs and circumstances together

The proposed spending should make sense alongside your income, ordinary commitments and available funds. A short hosted visit can have different costs from a long hotel stay; a headline balance alone does not explain either.

Own funds or genuine support

Funds may come from your own resources or qualifying third-party support. Explain who will pay for which costs and show that the resources are genuinely available. Do not temporarily borrow money merely to create a misleading balance.

Common mistakes

  • Following an invented minimum-balance rule from social media.
  • Showing a balance without explaining its source or the trip costs.

Evidence to consider

These are examples to consider where relevant, not a mandatory checklist or a guarantee that requirements are met.

  • Statements reflecting ordinary income, expenditure and available savings.
  • A proportionate budget and evidence of any sponsor support.
