Sponsor evidence
Who can sponsor a UK visit—and what must the applicant still prove?
Genuine third-party support can fund a visit, but cannot replace the applicant’s own visitor requirements.

The third-party support requirements
Travel, maintenance or accommodation can be provided by another person where the requirements in Appendix V are met. The decision-maker must be satisfied about a genuine relationship and the supporter’s ability and intention to provide the support. A UK-based supporter must not be in breach of immigration law.
An invitation is not immigration permission
Sponsoring a visitor is not the same as sponsoring a worker under a sponsor licence. A relative, friend or other genuine supporter does not guarantee a visa by issuing an invitation.
The applicant still qualifies individually
The visitor must still establish a permitted purpose, an intention to leave and compliance with the other requirements. Explain both the support and the applicant’s circumstances outside the UK.
Common mistakes
- Assuming a British sponsor guarantees the application.
- Providing only the sponsor’s documents and none explaining the visitor’s circumstances.
Evidence to consider
These are examples to consider where relevant, not a mandatory checklist or a guarantee that requirements are met.
- An explanation and evidence of the genuine relationship.
- Relevant supporter status, resources and precise support arrangements.
